SANTA FE, N.M. — Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Monday to participate in a bipartisan forum aimed at encouraging more civil political discussions.
The event, held at the University of Michigan, paired New Mexico’s Democratic governor with Republican Utah Governor Spencer Cox as part of the Disagree Better initiative.
The campaign was launched by Cox during his tenure as chairman of the National Governors Association and focuses on bringing together elected leaders from different political parties for conversations about improving political discourse and finding common ground.
Monday’s appearance marks the first of three Disagree Better events scheduled for Lujan Grisham this month.
The governor is expected to join Cox again at a second forum in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Sept. 24. She is also scheduled to participate in a discussion at Duke University in North Carolina on Sept. 29 alongside Republican Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon.
State officials say the forum series is designed to promote respectful dialogue at a time when political divisions remain a major concern nationwide.
While the governor is traveling, Lt. Gov. Howie Morales is overseeing day-to-day state operations. Lujan Grisham is expected to return to New Mexico on Tuesday.
