RIO RANCHO, N.M. — Rio Rancho City Councilor Jeremy Lenentine has announced he will step down from his District 2 seat later this year, citing family considerations.
Lenentine’s final day in office will be Nov. 12, 2026, ending more than six years of service on the city’s governing body.
In a statement, Lenentine thanked District 2 residents, city staff, and fellow councilors, saying it had been a privilege to serve the community and help advance projects and initiatives throughout Rio Rancho.
“I do not take lightly the trust that has been placed on me by the citizens of my district,” Lenentine said. “This is a great city, and the hard-working people of District 2 have been wonderful to work for during my tenure as a councilor.”
Lenentine was first appointed to the District 2 seat in April 2019 after a vacancy occurred. He was subsequently elected to a two-year term in 2020, a four-year term in 2022, and was reelected to another four-year term earlier this year.
Mayor Paul Wymer praised Lenentine’s service, saying he valued their working relationship over the past six years and wished him well in future endeavors.
Under the Rio Rancho City Charter, the mayor is responsible for appointing a qualified successor within 60 days of the vacancy. The appointment must then be confirmed by the City Council.
The person selected to fill the District 2 seat will serve until the city’s next regular municipal election in March 2028. At that election, voters will choose someone to complete the remainder of the term through a two-year term before the seat returns to its normal four-year election cycle.
City officials say information about the application and selection process for interested District 2 residents will be announced in the coming weeks.
