ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque Public Schools is introducing a new visual identity, replacing its longtime apple logo with a balloon-inspired design that district leaders say better reflects Albuquerque, its students, and the future of the district.
The new logo, known as the APS Balloon, draws inspiration from Albuquerque’s internationally recognized hot air ballooning culture, as well as local landmarks including the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande.
According to APS, the balloon symbolizes students’ educational journey and growth, while a graduation cap incorporated into the design represents academic achievement and the district’s Profile of a Graduate initiative.
District officials said the change is intended to create a more unified and recognizable identity. APS noted that its previous apple logo occasionally caused confusion with other organizations and that the new design better represents the district and community.
The rebranding comes as APS prepares for the start of the 2026-27 school year and continues efforts to address enrollment declines that have affected many school districts in recent years. Despite those challenges, APS remains the largest school district in New Mexico, serving approximately 60,000 students across more than 140 schools.
The district is also encouraging families to complete annual registration and update student records before classes begin. APS students in grades 1 through 12 return Aug. 7, while pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students begin Aug. 11.
APS says the new logo reflects the district’s “APS Rising” vision and will be used in district communications and materials moving forward.
