ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — One of Albuquerque’s biggest birthday girls is officially turning into a big kid.
Maisy, the adorable Nile hippopotamus at the ABQ BioPark, celebrated her first birthday this week with a party perfectly suited for a growing hippo: pumpkins, family time, and plenty of play.
Instead of cake and candles, Maisy dug into a feast of carved pumpkins alongside her mom and older sister, Matilda. The hippo family also spent the day batting around a giant boomer ball, one of their favorite enrichment toys.
But according to her caretakers, the real story of Maisy’s first year has been her friendship with Matilda.
The sisters have become inseparable.
Whether it’s mealtime, playtime, or splashing around their habitat, Maisy is often right behind her big sister. Caretakers say she follows Matilda everywhere, chasing her, playfully nibbling on her tail, and making sure she’s never far away from the action.
“Matilda and Maisy are best friends,” said an ABQ BioPark Senior Animal Care Specialist. “Maisy follows her big sister everywhere.”
Over the last year, visitors have watched Maisy grow from a curious calf into one of the zoo’s most popular attractions. While staff describe her as a little shy, they also say she’s affectionate, gentle, and full of personality.
And if her first year is any indication, Maisy’s second year will likely include more adventures, more mischief, and plenty more moments alongside her favorite companion.
For now, though, the birthday girl appears perfectly content with a day full of pumpkins, playtime, and family.
Not a bad way to spend a first birthday when you’re a hippo.
