July 19th’s Pets of the Week

Just to “catch up” on a couple of our previous featured pets….Sweet Mona Lisa (featured a couple weeks ago) spent some quality time with a very sweet young boy on Thursday afternoon and almost won his mom over with her gentle nature and sweet disposition but at this time their busy schedules will only allow feline companions. Mona Lisa is calmly waiting for you at our Eastside shelter.

Blossom our herding gal and Frisbee catcher has been practicing her skills hopeful someone might consider her for agility training and Frisbee competition. If competition is not for you she would be perfectly happy catching Frisbees in your yard and accompanying you on a jog or walk. Take her out to one of our play yards at the Eastside shelter and spend some quality time with her. To ensure that you can spend quality time with our more energetic dogs it might be best to come after noon on Saturdays as our play yards are taken up in  the mornings with our training classes.

This week we have two very different dogs to feature showing the great diversity of dogs awaiting homes at our shelters.

Auburn (ID# A 1697989) is a 2 year old, female dark sable & white American Pit Bull Terrier mix.  Auburn is a tall thin girl (maybe some Lab in her) She weighs 45.8 pounds. Auburn is on the taller side. She had been quite shy when she came to us a stray. Once we gave her a bath we were able to see her beauty. She has a lovely coat and has kept herself very clean. She can be a little shy with new people but warms up quickly. When we take Auburn out of her kennel she is so excited to be able to be with someone, stretch her legs and receive attention. In a matter of moments she begins to walk well on leash. With regular walks she should be a great walking partner. She sure acts as if she may have a bit of Labrador Retriever in genes as she loves the water and kiddy pool. She splashes around and it is so cute when she puts her whole face in and blows bubbles. She just loves to do this, maybe it tickles her nose. She is a very sweet loving girl. She enjoys petting and often gently puts her paws in your lap to rest her head against your chest. She has participated in our doggie play groups. As you might expect she was a shy girl and seemed inexperienced around other dogs. She did quite well with soft low energy dogs. So far she has not shown interest in group play or a game of chase. With gentle introductions and a soft player she may learn the fine art of doggie play. Of course she would be perfectly happy as your one and only. When she came to use we noticed she cracked one of her lower canine teeth. At this time she has not problems and extraction was not needed. When animals get older occasionally a tooth may need to be extracted. Auburn’s adopter will need to acknowledge that in her older age this tooth may need to be extracted. Come meet this pretty loving girl at our Eastside shelter. Our shelter is brimming with beautiful, unusual, talented and well behaved hopefuls waiting for their forever home. Sweet Auburn is kenneled in our largest building. It may be a bit louder with so many dogs vying for your attention. Taking a moment to walk through the kennels to locate your potential adoptee followed by some “bonding time” you will find Auburn or any of our other shelter dogs will have a chance to blossom in a calm and quieter atmosphere.

Rodger (ID# A 1692273) is a 1 year & 10 month old, male, sable brindle & white German Shepherd mix. He weighs 54 pounds. Roger is a young fairly energetic and very affectionate boy. He is quite frustrated as you can imagine in his kennel. We have mentioned so many times how important it is not to judge a dog by his behavior in the kennel. That is why we will not approve an adoption until the person has spent “bonding time” with the potential adoptee away from the kennel. Out of the kennel and after a couple moments celebrating the excitement of being out of his kennel Rodger is pretty good on leash. He is very attentive to his person often looking up to them. He is smart already knowing the cues for sit and down. He should excel in a training class. He is sweet, loving and affectionate. He enjoys sprinting around our play yard so would be a great jogging partner. After a bit of exercise and practicing his skills/tricks Rodger’s usual routine is to relax at someone’s feet and roll over for a belly rub. Rodger has a very nice picture taken by our exceptionally talented volunteer photographer but he is even more beautiful in person. Rodger takes walks and plays well near other dogs but if they get into his person space he is quick to let them know. We are always happy to conduct a meet and greet but we think Rodger will be happiest being your one and only devoted companion. With Rodger you will be adopting an attentive, playful and fun-loving, very handsome steadfast companion that will shower you with kisses….what more could you want or need? Rodger is ready to meet you at our Eastside shelter.

“Terrie Q. Sayre & Travelin’ Jack’s Pet Friends II”

Terrie mentioned last week that the deadline for the 2014 edition of Terrie Q Sayre & Travelin’ Jack Pet Friends II book is soliciting entries now until August 1, 2014. The book is a benefit project for animal adoption charities and to highlight the joy of pets. Last year’s book project supported two special groups that encourage pet adoptions in the greater Albuquerque Area; Lucky Paws and Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres the charity arm of Albuquerque Animal Welfare. Several hundred dollars were donated to these organizations so “thank you” to all that sent in the beautiful pictures of their beloved pets as well as purchasing the book. I have last year’s book on my coffee table and it is frequently perused by those that visit my home. Please consider sending in a photo and purchasing the book. I promise it will brighten your day and the money raised will benefit so many of our homeless pets. Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department Urges

“Pit Bull” Parents to Prevent Unwanted
Litters during the August “Primp Your Pit” Campaign

Albuquerque, New Mexico – This August, Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department plans to spay/neuter 60 Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs for residents only in Albuquerque for a special $20 rate, which includes a free doggie nail trim, during PetSmart Charities® annual “Primp Your Pit” campaign.

American Pit Bull Terriers are one of the most popular dogs in the country. Yet an estimated 70% of all dogs housed and euthanized in urban animal shelters are Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs.

Sadly, myths and misunderstandings contribute to high shelter intake and low adoption rates of Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs of all ages.

To reduce their shelter numbers, PetSmart Charities is providing more than $388,000 in grant funding to 57 animal welfare organizations across the nation so they can sterilize 6, 796 Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs during the August campaign.

The American Veterinary Medical Association endorses spaying and neutering puppies as young as eight to 10 weeks old. Research shows that the procedure may improve the behavior and health of the pet, including reducing the risk of certain reproductive cancers and infections.

Pit bull parents who wish to take advantage of this special offer must mention the “Primp Your Pit” promotion when they schedule their appointments. The promotion is based on availability and spaces are limited.

Please visit www.cabq.gov/pets  or call 764-1170 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
