As you will remember we only had one dog to feature last week as Sasha was adopted late Friday. Wonderful news, Adelle the 6 month old puppy we spoke about was adopted Wednesday, February 26th.
We are featuring brothers we are hoping to find a forever home where they can go home together. They have been together their entire lives and are so attached. It would just be too sad to separate them. These two will be wonderful companions on the mellower side.
James (ID# A 1689845 and Jerry (ID# A 1689846) were surrendered together and we are hoping to find them a home together. James is an 8 year old, male black Labrador Retriever mix that weighs 70.2 pounds. Jerry is an 8 year old, male tricolor Bernese Mountain Dog mix that weighs 59.8 pounds. When they were owner surrendered we were told that they inherited the dogs from their parents. They kept them for one year in the back yard of their Tanoan home but they escaped digging. They also said the dogs could not be house trained, were very hard to walk on leash and had no obedience training. James and Jerry are kenneled together and have never soiled the inside or the outside of their kennel. In fact they are “potty brigade dogs” because they will hold in not using the outside portion until absolutely necessary. They are large dogs but walk nicely on leash especially with each other. They are so nice on leash that one volunteer can walk them both on leash next to each other. They both know the cue for sit and are eager to please. They both know the cue for sit well. Jerry is more outgoing and James a bit shy. James seems to look to Jerry for leadership and while walking or playing James checks to see where his brother is. They always immediately take care of business when taken out each morning. We think they are house trained and should be easily house trained in their new home. Like any other dog they will need to learn their new home/family’s routine and the proper time and place to go. Jerry and James probably were quite lonely in the back yard wanting to be with people and wondering why they could not share affection and love. We find them to be very affectionate dogs. They are actually a great age. They have enough energy to playfully run around the yard yet also can be mellow just enjoying an easy walk and some petting or lying at your feet. They should have a yard with a secure wall that can not be dug underneath. We hope they will find a home this time where they can be with their family most of the time and not left in the back yard all the time. From what we have witnessed in the shelter they should be great indoor dogs. Perhaps James could loose a couple pounds and a daily walk will slim him down. We have noticed that Jerry tries to steal the food from James and it appears they may have had a disagreement over food when left unattended. James has a couple old sores on his nose. We have been feeding one on the inside of the kennel and one outside of the kennel and they do just fine. Most of the time Jerry wolfs his food down fast and James takes time to savor his food. Jerry quickly comes over to steal James’ food. Many of us feel you should never feed your dogs from the same bowl. They should have their own food bowl in separate areas, even better if their humans can be watchful too. Jerry will try to snitch treats too if given near James so this is a consideration for their new parents. They drink from the same water bowl just fine. James and Jerry are presently in the same kennel sharing a large bed and sleep together. They might enjoy having individual beds to stretch out on. These two boys are super sweet and have many fans at our shelter. They can be a bit shy when meeting new people but very quickly warm up and become very loving dogs. They ended up at our shelter through unfortunate circumstances and it appears their second home just did not want the responsibility so may have made up excuses to surrender them. Our volunteer photographer took lovely pictures of them this last week and they are lovely looking dogs. Jerry has beautiful markings in his coat and James has an expressive sweet face. These two boys are located at our Eastside shelter waiting for to find love again and a real forever home.
