DONA ANA COUNTY MAY TAKE $1M FROM SHERIFF’S BUDGET

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) Dona Ana County commissioners are considering transferring more than $1 million in funds from its sheriff's department to a more general fund used for certain expenses. The Las Cruces Sun-News reports commissioners will meet Tuesday morning in Las Cruces to discuss the change to the budget.

Under the proposal, $1.4 million earmarked for 25 currently vacant positions in the sheriff's department would shift to being used for “one-time capital'' expenses. Commissioners say the transfer would run until June 30, the end of the fiscal year.

The money for the vacant positions would be restored in the 2014-2015 budget.
