FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) A jury is to begin deliberating Friday in the trial of a man accused of bludgeoning a Farmington doctor to death. The Daily Times reports that jurors heard closing arguments in John Mayes' trial on Thursday in a Gallup courtroom.
The 20-year-old son of Farmington's city manager is charged with murder and other crimes in the June 9, 2011, killing of Dr. James Nordstrom in his residence. The prosecution contends the killing was a cold-blooded murder by Mayes, who then went to Burger King and shopping with Nordstrom's credit card.
Mayes contends he was defending himself from an unwanted sexual advance.
