NM MAN WHOSE GRANDSON ATE COCAINE GETS PROBATION

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) A 43-year-old man who works for the city of Santa Fe has been sentenced to a year's probation because his 2-year-old grandson ate cocaine that he found at his grandparents' home. David Wheeler was sentenced after pleading no contest on Monday to a misdemeanor charge of abandonment of a child under a plea agreement with prosecutors.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that Wheeler originally was charged with abuse of a child and tampering with evidence. Wheeler's wife, Carmella Wheeler, similarly pleaded no contest in March to a child-abandonment charge stemming from the October incident.

A city spokesman says Wheeler won't face disciplinary action from the city. He drives a van for the Senior Services Division.
