Finally the women’s world cup of soccer or tiddlywinks or sewing or whatever that was that we were inundated with over the last few months with is over. Most Americans could care less about soccer, and even less about women’s soccer. We all need to realize it’s not about making us want to watch soccer it’s all about the global marketplace. The rest of world is in love with soccer and our American corporations–McDonalds, Visa, Coca-Cola, Hyundai , and all the others see an opportunity to increase their market share in America by trying to make us feel it’s the “patriotic” duty to pay attention, watch, and support soccer. And guess what, it worked. Many Americans were duped into paying attention to soccer so for all of you who do enjoy your boring sport.
Speaking of sports, I cut my satellite TV a few months ago so I have been on the standard 5 channels and Netflix for a while now. But I was really excited that the Daytona Nascar race was going to be on NBC last weekend. So just my luck after a three hour rain delay it did not get started till about 9:45 our time Sunday night. Which NBC decided to fill with rain delay coverage instead of opting out for a bit to show a rerun of Law and Order or The Voice or the Golden Girls or even Quincy? This is NBC, after all they have 70 years of programming to dump into, I would have settled for a 1970’s Bob Hope Christmas Special. I wanted to be a trooper and stay up and watch. I haven’t been able to see a Nascar race in two months because they have been on cable. But because of my two year old, an eight months pregnant wife, taking care of my cows, and fencing 20 acres of property this summer I was only able to manage watching the race until 11:30. Evidently I missed a classic, Dale Jr. won and it featured a lot of big wrecks that bring up again how “dangerous” and “barbaric” stock car racing is and how it needs to be changed to a softer more friendly and inviting sport. I guess more like women’s soccer. So I was a little miffed that Nascar and NBC decided to have this thing on so late and not wait till Monday and have it at a more reasonable time. I figure it is because the corporate sponsors and big money people all had flights Monday and couldn’t stay in Daytona another day and because NBC could not fathom bumping two hours of American Ninja Warrior and the reality show The Island Monday so they could show a Nascar race. NBC now has the Nascar contract for the rest of the season and would you believe of the remaining 19 Nascar races this season only 7 will be on “regular” NBC. The rest will be regulated to the absurd NBC Sports Network. But I’ll still not be going back to satellite TV. It is just not worth it, and this gives me something else to be irritated about. Until next time America.
