SICK IMMIGRANT KIDS REPORTEDLY NOT GETTING MEDS

ARTESIA, N.M. (AP) An advocate who visited a New Mexico detention center says immigrant women are reporting that sick children aren't getting proper care and pregnant women quickly are being deported. Tannia Esparza, executive director of Young Women United, told The Associated Press on Tuesday the immigrant women she visited at the Artesia facility say children with coughs and diarrhea aren't receiving medicine. She says women reported that immigration authorities often single out pregnant detainees for swift deportation.

The Central American women also reported that families are pulled in the middle of the night for deportation, often without ever visiting with a lawyer. She says one woman told her she came to the U.S. after her child was threatened by suspected organ traffickers.

Esparza visited the Artesia complex Tuesday with other advocates. Around 600 are being detained at the Artesia center.
