ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) Otero County commissioners want to find a way to provide more funding to address the feral pig problem. The Alamogordo Daily News reports the commissioners discussed the invasive porkers during a recent meeting. They were told by a wildlife specialist that the county is currently out in front of the problem, but the pigs' propensity for breeding could change that.
Another challenge is the pigs still roaming the southern New Mexico county are smart enough to avoid traps and public roads. The U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Agriculture Department have been working to reduce feral pig numbers in Otero County and elsewhere across the state.
Officials say they're planning night operations in Otero County to see if they can catch more of the pigs when they're active.
