BILL WOULD PROTECT BENEFITS OF INJURED OFFICERS

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) The retirement benefits of officers and firefighters injured in the line of duty would be protected under a bill pending in the New Mexico Legislature. The bill filed Tuesday by Rep. Paul Pachecho aims to keep New Mexico police, fire and corrections officers from losing part of their retirement when they collect worker's compensation benefits.

Injured public safety officers go into what's called “dead time'' and no longer accrue time toward retirement when they're off work recovering

The Line of Duty Injury Act allows and encourages agencies around the state to pay enough administrative time to cover what the injured employees lose toward retirement.
