November 2nd Pets of the Week

After last weekend’s celebration of National Pit Bull Awareness Day we had 65 adoptions (22 were Pit Bull mixes). Seventy microchips were applied and the best news is that 111 spay/neuter vouchers were given to owners of intact pit bull mixes.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the training sessions and enjoyed finding their forever companion.

Our two lovely Pit Bull Terrier mixes from last week Sagio and Macy Gray are dressed in their festive bandanas and ready to go home.

This week we are featuring two dogs that have a great number of staff and volunteers that dearly love them. The started out at our Eastside shelter and are now ready to find their forever families at Lucky Paws in Coronado Center Mall.

Aries (ID# A 1665629) is a 1 year & 4 month old, male brindle & black Labrador Retriever and Pit Bull Terrier mix. Aries was a bit bashful when his picture was taken. You can see he is a regal looking dog but you can’t quite see his loving and playful personality. Aries is a tall large dog approximately 65 or so pounds. He loves to fetch tennis balls and brings them back. His personality and temperament is all Labrador Retriever. Aries walks quite well on leash. He is very attentive to the person walking him. If his walker stops he stops and sits. He is very smart and eager to please. Aries might be a great dog to partner up with for further obedience training or agility. He would love the challenge and especially time spent with you, his best friend.  Aries loves to be with people. He enjoys petting and affection. He is very affectionate and after a walk or play time he is happy to sit next to you with his big head in your lap or lean into you for some loving. Aries has participated in several play groups at our Eastside shelter. He has done so well and displayed excellent social skills so he became one of our play group greeter dogs. These are dogs that enjoy and encourage play. They can adapt to the play style of another dog and although they may let another dog know if it does something they do not like they let it go and resume play. Aries loves to play and we have observed him encouraging a less experienced dog into play and before long they were playing chase and enjoying a bit of rowdy play. Aries can play a bit on the rowdy side often tackling during chase and if the other dog plays vocally he will too.  Like we humans get a bit talkative when we are having a good time dogs can too. Sometimes people mistake this as aggression or one dog being dominant over the other. As long as it is a mutual type of play it is common normal dog play. Aries is young and fairly energetic he might be too playful for a really timid or much older dog. Aries has also played well with a small corgi mix named Sandy who “herds” in her play nipping at heels and such. Even though she is very low to the ground and much smaller they played very well together. Sandy is also at Lucky Paws now. Aries will make a wonderful companion. He will be devoted to his person, bring them joy with his friendly loving personality and would love to accompany his family on long daily walks, hiking or camping.

Pilgrim (ID# A 1588704) is a 3 year old, male, black & cream Saluki & German Shepherd mix. Just like his lovely picture Pilgrim is a sweet sincere soul. He is built like a Saluki with a thin body and long nose of a sight hound. He is approximately 45 pounds or so but a bit on the skinny side. He should gain a few pounds. He is not quite as tall as an average Saluki but his fur is the typical coloring and very soft. Pilgrim is a softer natured dog, a bit shy initially. He enjoys being petted and affection. He knows the cue for sit and is eager to please. Pilgrim is always very calm, quiet and well behaved in his kennel.  He enjoys taking walks and is pretty good on leash. Pilgrim was at our Eastside shelter originally. He is a happy dog and shows his joy by little skips into the air in a playful manner. This is quite endearing.  While at the Eastside we did not get a chance to have him in a play group but he was very well behaved when taking a walk alongside other dogs and while in a play yard with some much more active dogs around. Pilgrim loves to be scratched just under his ears and kind of purrs.  He enjoys lying at your feet or putting his head in your lap. He has the sweetest expression when looking up at you. You will not be able to resist this gentle dog. Once you spend a few minutes with him he will melt your heart.

Seasons are changing and the holidays will be fast approaching. Please remember that with colder weather your pets need sufficient shelter from the cold and weather. The can not be outside in freezing temperatures.  What can be better than curling up with your loving companion on a cold night while reading, watching TV or sharing family time? Also, with the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving and Holiday parties along with relatives/friends coming and going please remember your pets can easily become lost in the confusion. Sometimes just keeping them in a bedroom during the party or dinner can help keep them safe. If they do get lost contact AWD with their information and come to the shelter so we may help reunite your family. Shelters all over the country become crowded with lost companions while people are out of town or when visiting relatives forget to close doors etc.

All the goodies that go along with these holidays are a treat for us but can be deadly to our pets. Holiday time pets can get a hold of plants like Poinsettias or chocolate and in a matter of seconds their lives are in danger. This time of year emergency clinics are very busy trying to save pets from exposure, accidents while running lost and consuming the wrong thing. Please keep your holidays happy and safe for all members of your family
