ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) The University of New Mexico is feeling the pinch from the federal government shutdown. The Albuquerque Journal reports that researchers and others at the university aren't able to get government officials to consider dozens of proposals or other pending matters.
Some federal grants for health and medical research projects have been approved but not funded. And new grant applications aren't being processed during the shutdown.
Meanwhile, some researchers' work already in progress is also being affected. One is Anny Chung, a graduate student in biology. Because of the shutdown, she can't enter the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in center New Mexico to check on range grasses. She says the shutdown's timing is terrible for her because last month's rain resulted in a lot of germinations.
