NM INMATES GIVEN CARD WITH INFO ON COLD CASES

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) New Mexico's most populous county is following the lead of authorities in several other states as it takes an unconventional way to try to get tips from state prison inmates about cold cases. The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department this week distributed playing cards with pictures and information about cold cases to inmates at New Mexico state prisons. The cards have information on 44 unsolved homicides and eight missing person cases.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that cold case cards have been circulated in prisons in such states as Florida, Illinois and Washington, resulting in tips that solved at least three killings.

Sheriff's Sgt. Aaron Williamson says the cards represent thinking outside the box in an effort to solve cases that have been on the books for 25 or more years.
