CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) Clovis police arrested a man and recovered guns stolen from a home after people reported seeing a man carrying a semi-automatic rifle while running near a middle school. According to the Clovis News Journal, that school and a nearby elementary school were placed on lockdown for about 30 minutes during the incident Thursday. Police say 23-year-old Andrew J. Chavez Jr. of Clovis was arrested without incident when officers found him hiding in bushes.
A rifle and a handgun were found outside an apartment complex where police believe they were dumped. Police Capt. Patrick Whitney says the items were from a home across the street from one of the schools.
Whitney says warrants accused Chavez of assaulting a police officer and absconding from the state probation and parole department.
