SUICIDE EXPERT TESTIFIES IN NM OFFICER MURDER CASE

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) A suicidology expert says a wife of a former Albuquerque police officer showed signs before her death she was at risk of killing herself. Alan Berman told jurors Wednesday that text messages and diary entries left by Tera Chavez revealed she was in a love-hate relationship with husband Levi Chavez with no way out. He says after looking at her diaries he believed her death was consistent with a suicide.

Levi Chavez is standing trial on charges that he shot his 26-year-old wife with his department-issued gun in 2007 at their Los Lunas home and then tried to make her death look like a suicide.

Prosecutors later poked holes in part of Berman's theory that Tera had access to the gun by suggesting the gun wasn't actually in the house.
