ALBUQUERQUE EX-OFFICER’S MURDER TRIAL TO RESUME

BERNALILLO, N.M. (AP) The murder trial of a former Albuquerque police officer accused of killing his wife is set to enter its third week of testimony. The Albuquerque Journal reports that state District Judge George Eichwald is expected to rule Monday on whether a potential alibi witness must testify in the murder trial of Levi Chavez. Court documents say that Russell Perea doesn't want to take the stand because of his own pending legal case.

Prosecutors say Levi Chavez shot his wife, 26-year-old Tera Chavez, with his department-issued gun in 2007 at their Los Lunas home, and then tried to make her death look like a suicide.

Perea had said that he and Levi Chavez were together their entire shift but records showed discrepancies about if they were together the whole time.
