SANTA FE DISTRICT PLANS SUIT OVER SCHOOL FUNDING

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) The Santa Fe school district is preparing to sue the state to contend that New Mexico doesn't satisfy a constitutional mandate for sufficient funding for public education. The Albuquerque Journal reports that the Santa Fe district's board has earmarked $100,000 in its budget for the coming year for the yet-to-be-filed lawsuit.

Officials of the Santa Fe district are looking for other districts to join the planned lawsuit, which is still being prepared. State Rep. Luciano Varela says he hopes discussions can help avoid a lawsuit.

The Legislative Finance Committee chairman says lawmakers have tried to adequately fund education in recent years while balancing the state budget.
