ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) State livestock regulators are moving a herd of emaciated cattle from a drought-parched ranch in the Fort Sumner area to greener pasture near Clayton in northeastern New Mexico. Television station KRQE reports that the Livestock Board has moved 270 of the cattle already and hopes to move the rest by the weekend.
Board officials served a search warrant at the Double V Ranch on May 17 and found at least 25 dead animals and others at risk of starving to death. The owner, Richard Evans, has been charged with 25 counts of cruelty to animals.
New Mexico is in its driest two-year period in nearly 120 years of record-keeping.
