SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) There may be room at the inn for Fido after all when his masters take refuge in an emergency shelter during a wildfire or other emergency in New Mexico.
Emergency shelters typically don't welcome humans' animal companions but New Mexico State University's Agriculture Extension Office has developed two mobile animal shelter units that could change that.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that the extension office has started training emergency management officials on how to use the units. The units can be trucked for use where needed and are equipped with materials to turn part of an existing emergency shelter into an animal area.
An urban version focuses on domestic animals such as dogs and cats, and one for rural areas can help accommodate hoses and other livestock.
