ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) New Mexico's largest city under a federal investigation over police excessive force cases will hold town hall meetings on overhauling its police oversight system. The Albuquerque Journal reports that Albuquerque councilors approved Monday to establish an 11-member task force to evaluate and make recommendations on the Police Oversight Commission by the end of the year. The group would hold three town hall meetings before sending a report to the council.
The bipartisan resolution also provides up to $50,000 to hire a consultant to help the task force with its work. The move comes as U.S. Justice Department is investigating the police department after a string of officer-involved shootings and high-profile abuse cases alleging the use of excessive and deadly force.
The Police Oversight Commission also has faced broad criticism.
