FORMER PORTALES POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS

PORTALES, N.M. (AP) A former Portales police officer faces 25 years in prison after being sentenced on his guilty pleas to sex charges involving a female high school student.  Victor Castillo pleaded guilty to 17 of 34 charges, including sexual exploitation of a child and criminal sexual contact of a minor. The student's mother told District Judge Donna Mowrer that Castillo's conduct shattered her daughter's dream of becoming a police officer and led to thoughts of suicide.

District Attorney Matt Chandler said the investigation began after state police were told that sexual activity involving minors took place during a party at Castillo's home in Clovis.

The Portales News-Tribune reports that Castillo was a 45 year-old school resource officer at the time.
