FOREST SERVICE HEARS COMPLAINTS ABOUT NM CLOSURES

PECOS, N.M. (AP) The Forest Service is hearing complaints about campground closures and service reductions in other recreation areas in northern New Mexico's Santa Fe National Forest. Several campgrounds in the Pecos-Las Vegas Ranger district are closed while restrooms are closed and trash cans removed in multiple day-use sites because of budget cuts.

According to television station KRQE, people are leaving trash such as toilet paper and empty beer cans around some of the sites where cans have been removed. The Albuquerque Journal reports that the Upper Pecos Watershed Association and the Pecos Business Association Area residents are asking the Forest Service to reopen the facilities.

Forest spokesman Bruce Hill says it's the middle of the federal fiscal year but that the forest hasn't received its final budget allocation.
