Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –The Association of Zoos and Aquariums wants an explanation from the Albuquerque BioPark. The association is conduting an inquiry into the recent escape of Alice the elephant from her enclosure. Several years of Department of Agriculture reports conducted at the facility revealed multiple infractions, some listed as critical. The Biopark stated that they have since corrected all of those infractions. There have been animal deaths at the Biopark over the past few years, including an orangutan in 2025, a wombat last year, a hippo euthanized due to a dental infection, and a giraffe with arthritis. Biopark Director Brandon Gibson says they take the incident very seriously and hope the incident doesn’t affect the facilities upcoming re-accreditation in September.
