Chimayó, NM (KKOB) Thousands of people from around New Mexico, the U.S and around the world are taking part in the annual Easter weekend pilgrimage to the state’s well known religious sanctuaries. Since early Good Friday morning, thousands began the walk along U.S 84 to the Santuario, and along the way joined thousands of others as well as hundreds of volunteers and first responders who are available to support anyone who may need some assistance or to provide water and some snacks to those making the journey. In some cases, people walked days in advance from Albuquerque and Santa Fe beginning on Wednesday and Thursday. News Radio KKOB’s Natassja Leyba was among those taking part in the pilgrimage. She spoke with volunteers who set up tables and stands along the route as well as those making the sacrifice for loved ones, family members and friends.
If you plan on making the trek this weekend please remember to prepare. Authorities remind everyone to wear visible clothing, especially when walking in the dark. The early morning hours are expected to be cold in some cases below freezing, so dress warmly in layers. Also make sure to take plenty of water. Drivers along U.S 84 in Santa Fe County as well as those in the area of Tomé Hill need to watch out for pedestrians and reduce your speed.
