Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — New Mexico health officials are warning against consuming raw milk after a newborn died from a listeria infection. The Department of Health says they cannot confirm the exact source, but believe the baby’s mother drank unpasteurized milk while pregnant, which may have caused the infection. Listeria can be especially dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Officials say the bacteria can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe illness in infants. The Medical Investigator continues to review the case, but the state says the infant’s death highlights the risks associated with raw dairy products.
