Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — A new Aurora Odds Index reveals the best states for spotting the northern lights as solar activity pushes auroras farther south. Arizona ranks first overall, followed by Nevada and New Mexico. High elevation, dry air, and clear skies make New Mexico a prime location for rare auroral displays, even though Alaska sees them most often. The index combines four factors—latitude, sky darkness, humidity, and clear-night frequency—to calculate long-term viewing chances. Researchers say strong geomagnetic storms could bring more opportunities for states in the Mountain West, where conditions are ideal for stargazing
