Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — A new report released by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives shows that 78% of all gun crimes in the state are committed with firearms that were legally purchased from licensed dealers. After that initial legal purchase, most of those weapons are then resold to
individuals who are prohibited from buying firearms legally. Data showed that 47% of guns recovered from crimes in the state were used less than three years after purchase, which the ATF identifies as a key red flag for illegal trafficking. From 2017 through 2021, nearly 63% of all crime guns in New Mexico were recovered within 50 miles of the store where they were purchased.
