One of our featured dogs from last week, Alyx the blue eyed husky/shepherd mix was adopted! My favorite fetch buddy Titan the shepherd/Rottweiler mix is still hopeful.
Our Back in Black special adoption event is in full swing. Both of our featured dogs this week are part of this special event.
You only have a couple more weeks to take advantage of the privilege of adopting a beautiful mostly black companion. May 1st Albuquerque Animal Welfare joined efforts with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary for the Back in Black adoption event. This month long promotion is dedicated to increasing awareness and adoptions of black cats and dogs. Although they are every bit as adorable, sweet and fun loving as any other, pets that are black often wait longer to find their forever homes than their lighter colored pals. This promotional event was started to shine a spotlight on these often over looked pets and help them find good homes. During the month of May add adult (1yr & over) dogs will be available for adoption at a reduced fee of $35.00 and adult cats will be $15.00. Some people tell us that darker animals just can not be seen well in a kennel so just another reason to take them out and spend a good amount of time bonding with them prior to adoption. In this different light their beauty can shine and as with any animal you get a truer picture of their personalities out away from the kennel.
Kitana (ID# A 1693663) is a 1 year & 7 month old, female black & white Border Collie mix. She weighs 44.9 pounds. It is a bit hard to see in her picture but Kitana is a tall long legged beauty. She has been very calm and well behaved in her kennel. She is also one of our potty brigade dogs. She enjoys taking walks and is easy on leash. Kitana is a sweet loving dog that enjoys affection and gives little kisses. She is eager to please already knowing the cue for sit. Kitana has a softer nature but she also very much enjoys “letting loose” and running in a big circle around the play yard. Perhaps she might enjoy being your jogging partner. Kitana has participated in doggie play groups. Initially she was a bit shy so perhaps she never had a chance to play with other dogs before coming to our shelter. By her second play group she was playing very well and having a grand time. She is a herding breed dog so even though we have not observed it yet she may herd her people, children or other dogs once she is comfortable with her new family. She has a lovely soft shorter coat and has been good with brushing. Kitana bonds quickly to people. She will be a devoted companion. She wants her forever person to share in daily walks, a bit of play, or chase around your yard and shared affection. She says, “I do not want to be left alone all day in a yard”, I’m your companion! Since she is house trained she could be inside when you need to be away from home. Kitana is waiting for you at our Eastside shelter.
Sophie (ID# A 1694225) is a 6 year old, female black & white Labrador Retriever mix. She weighs 99 pounds and we are hoping her new family will help her loose a few pounds. Sophie is such a sweet soul…just look at her picture. Somehow she became lost from her home and came to our shelter. This poor girl was shell shocked when she arrived. She must have had a home and was loved. Sophie is house trained and a potty brigade girl. When such a nice dog like Sophie comes in stray to our shelter we just can’t help but try to consider what may have happened and why she was not reclaimed. Perhaps her owner was older or ill and had to leave her behind. Perhaps they died and somehow during the loss of her parent she became lost from the family. In any case Sophie is ready for the next chapter of her life and is ready for a forever home. Sophie is a bit on the shy side initially but wants to be your shadow companion. She has to be near you and loves to be petted. When sitting with her she often slides her nose under your hand enticing you to pet her. She enjoys taking walks but it appears she is concerned about being left behind. Sophie will either circle around you or she stops looking up to you as if to make sure you are still there. We think in a calm home environment she will easily relax into her new family’s routine and with daily walks she will gain her figure back as well as become an easy walking partner. Sophie has been quite interested in other dogs while strolling around the shelter. Perhaps you have a companion in need of a new best friend. Sophie is a great age having left her wild and crazy days behind for an easy going life of love and devotion. Sophie is waiting for you at our Eastside shelter.
So now you have adopted your forever companion, hopefully one of our featured pets. Perhaps you need some goodies for your dog (or cat). Sunday come to a massive yard sale that often has supplies for your pets as well as great people supplies too. By purchasing items at this event you will be helping many rescue organizations by spending your money on those goodies.
