February 8th Pets of the Week

With Valentine’s Day approaching love is in the air so to speak. We have wonderful shelter pets in need of homes. Most have found themselves at the shelter by no fault of their own.  If you have enough time and love to devote to a new or additional companion please consider sharing your heart and home.  When you adopt from a shelter you will find the gratitude these companions give back to you is priceless. A lifetime of devotion and joy with your new companion will be the best Valentine of all. Please remember that a pet should not be a “gift”.  Bringing all family members to help pick your perfect match will help ensure a happy union.

This week we have two very sweet loving young boys searching for their forever homes. These boys have their very own fan clubs and if you find one of their favorite volunteers or staff they will be happy share all their virtues. Until you find someone to inquire with check out our “tidbit cards” hanging on the kennel doors. These give great fun facts about our shelter pets.

Bolo (ID# A 1688408) is a 2 year old, male, gold, Australian Cattle Dog mix. He weighs 36.8 pounds a great smaller size. He became lost from his home. When he came to our shelter he was very fearful and unsure of his new surroundings. It appeared he had never been on a leash and he just hated wearing it. Sadly he also seemed unfamiliar with being petted or receiving affection. He became part of our Shy Dog Program where volunteers give extra attention to dogs like Bolo. They work to help build trust and confidence with the dogs. As they progress a bit of basic training so they can successfully be adopted and blossom into typical happy dogs. Today Bolo is eager to come out for a walk and easily leashed. He is eager to meet other dogs and will pull in their direction while on a walk. Young Bolo is frustrated by shelter life and on occasion can be active in his kennel. Many dogs find the shelter environment frustrating. There are just too many dogs competing for the attention of the customers passing by. Adding to their frustration is watching the volunteers pass by other dogs while they are left wondering when it will be their turn. Please do not judge the dogs by the way they are in the kennel. This is not a true picture of what they are like. Take Bolo out to see his true personality. When away from distractions he easily relaxes and enjoys petting. He has become quite an affectionate and loving dog.  Like any new companion he may take a little time to become comfortable with a new family but he began responding to us quickly in the shelter atmosphere.  Bonding with his new parents should be easier in a home environment with just a bit of patience on his new parents’ part. He enjoys nuzzling with his head on your chest and even trying to be a lap dog.  We think Bolo may have spent much of his early days left alone in a back yard. Perhaps this explains why he hated the leash and the reason touch and affection was foreign to him when he first arrived.  Knowing what a sweet boy Bolo has blossomed into it is sad to picture him in his previous life. Today Bolo craves attention and affection. Bolo loves to play with other dogs. He seems to lack experience but makes up with enthusiasm. We have noticed his play is a little overbearing with male dogs and somewhat softer with female dogs. Bolo would do well in a home with another dog if the other dog enjoys lots of play. We are always happy to help with a meet & greet between the present companion and potential adoptee. Since Bolo missed out on much deserved love and attention in his previous home being an only pet would make him very happy too. Perhaps you might have a play date with your friend’s dog once in a while. Bolo is located at our Eastside shelter.

Boy (ID# A 1688659) is a 1 year & 1 month old, male, black & white Pit Bull Terrier and German Shepherd mix. He weighs 51 pounds. He is a great size. He has the body and build of the terrier and the face and head of the German shepherd. Boy loves to be with people and is very attentive to his person. He is pretty good on leash.  He really enjoys daily walks and some play time or running round the play yard. Boy is very smart already knowing the cue for sit. He is eager to please and would love to learn new things or tricks. He would consider it great fun to attend the training classes that accompany your adoption. He says he could be the star pupil. After learning some new tricks you will enjoy showing everyone how talented he is. Boy always takes care of business immediately so house training this lovable boy should go well once he learns his new homes routine and the proper time and place to go. He enjoys affection and returns it with sweet kisses and nuzzles. After a walk or run he likes to rest his paws in a lap or rest his head against your chest for some affection and bonding time.  He has participated in our doggie play group. It seems that Boy may not have had opportunities to play in his previous home. He was a bit shy with the dogs at first and preferred softer play. If you have a present companion that enjoys softer play we would be happy to help with a meet and greet. Boy is so devoted to people he would be quite happy being an only dog too. If you have time for daily walks and exercise and are looking for an exceptional best friend then come meet this pretty boy at our Eastside shelter.
