Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Ten women inmates at Springer Correctional Center have completed New Mexico’s first wildland firefighter training program. Over four days, they learned fire suppression techniques, passed a rigorous physical test, and earned Red Card certification. The initiative, backed by the Corrections Department and Luna Community College, aims to reduce recidivism and provide career opportunities. Participants say the program boosted their confidence and gave them hope for life after incarceration. Officials plan to expand the program to other facilities.
