Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –Albuquerque’s Rail Trail has been in the works for more than two years, and this weekend it will be opening its first section, in the Sawmill District. The nearly quarter-mile segment cost about $5-million and connects Mountain to Bellamah Avenue in front of the Sawmill Market. The trail is 16-feet wide and has two arches decorated with artwork featuring flamenco dancers and sawmills. The trail also incorporates original train rails into the design. Other amenities include drought-resistant plants and solar-powered lighting. The city said the second Rail Trail segment under construction near Central Ave. and First Street is expected to be done in the spring and cost about $12 million.
