ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Just days before the start of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, city officials and New Mexico United announced they’re ready to begin groundwork for a long-planned soccer stadium at Balloon Fiesta Park.
The proposed stadium would seat between 8,000 and 10,000 fans and be located in the parking lot east of Balloon Fiesta Field. While the idea was first introduced two years ago, no physical work has taken place—until now. The city has hired a contractor to begin reviewing the site for necessary upgrades, including erosion control, plumbing, internet, and electricity.
New Mexico United is targeting 2028 for the stadium’s opening and plans to invest $30 million into the project. The team will continue playing at Isotopes Park in the meantime.
Some neighborhoods surrounding the park have pushed back against the stadium plan, raising concerns about noise and light pollution. United says it’s working to address those issues, including designing the stadium to funnel sound away from residential areas.
Team officials also envision the stadium as a community space, with plans to involve Meow Wolf in design elements and create opportunities for youth engagement.
“This is about showing what it looks like when our state comes together,” said United CEO Peter Trevisani. “We’re building something for the future—more teams, more events, and maybe even a women’s team down the road.”
Site preparation could begin this winter, though no timeline has been given for completion.
