ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As the school year continues across Bernalillo County, the Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers to stay alert and follow safety rules in school zones — especially when crossing guards are present.
BCSO officials say crossing guards play a critical role in keeping children and families safe during busy drop-off and pick-up times. “Every school day crossing guards are here to keep children and families safe on their way to and from school. A crossing guard’s job is to help everyone cross safely, not to direct traffic,” said Sergeant Otero with BCSO.
The department emphasized that crossing guards are trained to report unsafe driving and dangerous behavior, and they work closely with law enforcement to ensure school zones remain secure.
Drivers are urged to:
- Slow down in designated school zones.
- Obey crossing guard signals and instructions.
- Avoid distractions, especially during morning and afternoon school hours.
BCSO says increased patrols may be present in school zones throughout the year to reinforce safety and support crossing guards in their efforts.
