ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Monday marks the official start of autumn, but it doesn’t quite feel like fall in Albuquerque. The city is seeing above-normal temperatures and plenty of sunshine, making it feel more like summer than the start of a new season.
While the autumnal equinox brings nearly equal hours of daylight and darkness, the weather across New Mexico is mixed. In Albuquerque, temperatures are expected to reach the upper 70s to low 80s, with warmer conditions in southern parts of the state climbing into the 90s.
Some areas in the Northern Mountains are starting off near freezing, but the metro remains mild. Light winds and dry conditions dominate central and western New Mexico, though isolated thunderstorms could develop later in the day, especially in the mountains and eastern plains.
Despite the seasonal shift, fall foliage and cooler air may still be a few weeks away for much of the state. Forecasters say more moisture could move in later this week, bringing a slight drop in temperatures and a chance for scattered storms.
