ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The 2025 New Mexico State Fair may be over, but plans to redevelop the state fairgrounds are just getting started.
Albuquerque City Councilor Nicole Rogers is hosting a “Fairgrounds Reimagined” community meeting Monday night at Expo New Mexico. The meeting will focus on gathering public input for the future of the 236-acre site.
State leaders have hired a local consulting firm to develop a master plan, which will outline recommendations for how the land could be used. Former Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez, who is working on the project, says the governor wants decisions to be data-driven, including feedback from residents.
“Decisions have not been made. The governor wants them to be data-driven. She includes in the term data community input too,” Chavez said. “What do people think? What do they feel about it? But also, what are the hard numbers? How will this impact the neighborhoods around it?”
The master plan is expected to be completed by February 2026, offering the first look at potential ideas. Among the possibilities suggested by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham are affordable housing, business spaces, and a new entertainment district.
Officials say they especially want to hear from residents living near the fairgrounds. Monday’s meeting will be held at 6 p.m. inside the African American Performing Arts Center at Expo New Mexico, near San Pedro and Copper.
The State Fair District Board is also scheduled to meet Thursday to continue discussions.
