ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Bernalillo County officials are investigating the mistaken release of an inmate from the Metropolitan Detention Center. John James Romero, 29, was booked on September 13 on multiple charges, including three counts of criminal trespass and one count of resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer.
After a court appearance on September 15, Romero was properly released with credit for time served on two of the trespass charges. However, MDC officials say he was mistakenly released on recognizance for the remaining charges, which required a $25 bond. Initial findings point to human error.
The detention center is conducting a full review and will determine what corrective actions are needed once the investigation is complete.
