Albuquerque, NM — New Mexico United fans were given a standout performance Wednesday night at Isotopes Park, as the home team cruised to a 4-0 win over Detroit City FC. The victory marked United’s first home win since June 21 and lifted the club to third place in the USL Championship’s Western Conference standings.
The match featured several memorable moments, including a rare goal from beyond midfield by Zico Bailey in the fifth minute. Bailey spotted Detroit’s goalkeeper off his line and launched a 55-yard shot that sailed into the net, igniting the crowd of 7,347.
Goalkeeper Alex Tambakis also made history, recording his 58th career shutout to tie the USL Championship record held by Evan Newton. It was Tambakis’ sixth clean sheet of the season and his first start since July 30.
United added goals from Chris Gloster, Greg Hurst, and Valentin Noel, matching its season high for goals. Gloster’s goal came during the stadium’s “Magic Minute,” a fan tradition honoring New Mexico’s statehood and United’s inaugural season.
Head coach Dennis Sanchez praised the team’s confidence and effort:
“You see what confidence can do. Our win at San Antonio wasn’t pretty, but it got us started. Tonight was a complete performance.”
United held 56% of possession and narrowly outshot Detroit 11-10, maintaining control throughout the match. The win puts a seven-game winless streak firmly in the rearview mirror as United prepares to host first-place FC Tulsa on Saturday for its annual Meow Wolf Night.
