Albuquerque, NM — September 11, 2025
This morning, firefighters from across the Albuquerque area will gather downtown to take part in the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, a solemn tradition that began more than two decades ago. The event was started by Chuck Cogburn, a retired Albuquerque Fire Rescue firefighter, as a way to honor the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in the World Trade Center attacks.
At 8:46AM, the time the first plane struck the North Tower, firefighters will begin climbing 110 flights of stairs inside the Washington Federal Building—symbolizing the height of the Twin Towers. While the climb is reserved for firefighters, family, friends, media, and community members are invited to attend and show support.
Immediately following the climb, the City of Albuquerque will host a 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at Civic Plaza, beginning around 11:00AM. The ceremony will include traditional final honors:
- Striking the Four Fives,
- a 21 Gun Salute,
- and bagpipe performances.
Together, the climb and ceremony serve as a public remembrance of the lives lost and the legacy of service that continues today.
