ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – For the first time in its 125-year history, Albuquerque Fire Rescue staffed an engine company entirely with female firefighters.
On September 1, Engine 15 operated with an all-female crew during a 10-hour day shift. All four positions and ranks were filled by women, including Driver Burns, a veteran firefighter with 26 years of service.
AFR acknowledged the milestone as a reflection of the crew’s professionalism and dedication to public service. The department says the moment highlights progress in representation and celebrates the contributions of women in the fire service.
The historic shift marks a meaningful chapter in AFR’s long-standing commitment to serving the Albuquerque community.
