Zoo Staff Take Extra Measures to Keep Animals Cool During Record Temperatures
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As temperatures soar across New Mexico, animals at the Albuquerque BioPark and Zoo are staying cool thanks to a variety of creative solutions provided by staff.
With heat nearing record levels, zookeepers have activated misting machines, opened access to pools and water features, and ensured plenty of shaded areas are available throughout the park. Staff have also been handing out frozen treats tailored to each species—offering a refreshing break from the intense sun.
Bonnie Marquez with Activated Events Marketing said the team is focused on keeping animals comfortable and safe. “We sell water bottles and then also have hydration stations. We also have multiple giant shade structures and several of them have misting stations in them,” she said.
Visitors to the BioPark this week may spot animals lounging in the shade, splashing in water, or enjoying icy snacks—all part of the zoo’s effort to keep its residents healthy during the summer heat.
