Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — An outbreak of Douglas-fir tussock moth caterpillars is affecting Hyde Memorial State Park. The insects are defoliating fir trees, turning needles red before they fall. Park officials say the caterpillars carry tiny hairs that can cause allergic reactions in people and pets, including skin irritation and sneezing. Two group shelters are closed due to heavy activity. The outbreak is expected to last several more weeks, with cleanup planned once it subsides.
