Pets of the Week | Feb 20

Ana (ID# A 1734329) is a 1 year & 1 month old, female black & white American Pit Bull Terrier mix. She is a taller gal weighing 56 pounds. This sweet heart of a dog was surrendered on Valentines Day. She was a poor fit for her family, a bit too energetic for them. She is a young girl and does need regular walks. She also would be a good jogging or hiking companion. She is smart and eager to please already knowing the cue for sit and will politely sit for the leash to be put on. Bring her to the free training class. You and Ana will make a great team. Teaching skills (even easy things like sits, downs and shaking paws) works her brain and body and you will be a very proud parent.  She is pretty good on leash after her initial excitement. A game of fetch is perfect for this fun loving girl. She also has attended our doggie play groups and once she became comfortable with her new friends she had a great time.  Do you have a play mate for her? Bring that dog in to meet Ana.  Our staff has been using her as a helper dog during our temperament tests. Ana is quite the cuddle bug giving lots of affection and loves a kiss in return. Ana has beautiful eyes you can’t quite see in her picture. She eyes are gold and her black eye liner is lovely with her white face. Ana is ready for a bonding date with you at our Eastside shelter. She is a super girl that will be a fantastic companion for some one a bit more active than her first family.

Ana is located in our first building at the Eastside shelter. She has a new next door neighbor that is having a hard time adjusting to kennel life and is distracting to Ana so please take her to a play yard so you can get to know the real Ana. If she is not in her kennel she may be working helping staff so make sure someone pages staff to locate Ana.

Patches (ID# A 1202291) is a 1 year & 2 month old, male red merle Australian Cattle Dog mix. He is a bit larger and taller weighing 51 pounds. He can be a bit timid in the kennel due to his rowdy neighbors but he is eager to come out so quickly comes in when it is his turn to come out. He is a dream to walk on leash and enjoys being your walking partner. He is very affectionate and offers kisses. So far he is pretty mellow for his breed and age. Most likely he will become more active when comfortable in his new home. He came to us after a skirmish with a cat. Sometimes herding breeds are not the best of companions with felines so he needs a no cat home please. After a walk all Patches really wants is a belly rub. He snuggles and then kind of flops over belly up making his request. He has been known to fall asleep in this position. He is a smart dog already knowing the cue for sit well. He is playful with people and will come running up to you. You might expect he could jump up on you but most of the time he “catches” himself and stops to sit. A past parent must have worked on this polite behavior so that is a real plus. Patches will bond quickly and be a loving companion with just a bit of effort with acclimation to home and family. He may be a bit on the shy side initially. The time a dog needs to become comfortable in a new home varies from dog to dog. Some make themselves at home within days and some need a few weeks and it is our job to help them. If you have another dog bring them in for a meet and greet to make sure they will like this sometimes shy boy. Patches might enjoy a teenage companion too so if you have a child 14 or over bring him/her in to meet Patches as well. Our snuggle bug is located at our Eastside shelter.

If you are Irish or even if you are not…. maybe you just want to be or are looking for a fun day in the park.  Consider attending the Shamrock Fest located at Balloon Fiesta Park. Paint Albuquerque Green with our Celtic community in celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day. Revel in fun with themed activities through out the day. Albuquerque Animal Welfare will have our van there with animals available for adoption from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. I hear Travelin Jack Paddy O’Lane will be there dressed appropriately along with is favorite Irish lady Jill.
