Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — According to a comprehensive study done in New Mexico, researchers found that people in the Land of Enchantment are likely among the most at-risk populations for the “Valley Fever” disease in the United States. The illness is commonly associated with exposure to dust, and people contract the disease when they inhale soil-dwelling fungi that infect the lungs. Dry, dustier parts of the state seem to be more at risk for Valley fever since the areas are prone to dust storms, subsequently exposing people to the fungus. The study also found that rodent burrows have higher levels of the pathogen, since rodents can also get sick from the disease. Symptoms include: fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, and muscle aches or joint pain.
