KKOB Weather Alert:
New Mexico is bracing for potentially dangerous weather today, as flooding rains are in the forecast across much of the state.
Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop and spread statewide. Central New Mexico, including the Albuquerque area, could see heavy downpours with these storms.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for most of central and eastern New Mexico. The greatest concern is for areas with wildfire burn scars, where the ground can’t absorb water effectively. Even light rain can trigger flash flooding and debris flows, as scorched soil repels water and burned vegetation clogs drainage systems.
In Albuquerque, fast-moving storms could lead to rapid rises in arroyos and flood control channels. Residents are urged to stay alert and avoid flooded roadways.
