It took a week longer but our lovely Aussie Julie went home this last weekend! Last weekend’s featured pest lap dog Chico and playful toy loving Gunther are having a great time with our volunteers but would love to find their true forever home. What could be better than sharing your hearth and home with your new companion? They just need a safe, warm loving home and will give you love and companionship for a lifetime in return. Please don’t leave your dog/cat outside in the cold weather. As we all know a dog’s temperature can elevate quickly to death when left in a car for just a few moments. During winter months they can get hypothermia, frost bite and die very quickly in the cold weather. Even long fur is just not enough. Please bring them indoors.
We do want to shout out a reminder…. Please do not consider purchasing any pet to give as a gift for someone. That person needs to pick out their own companion and perhaps they really are not ready or do not want a companion. It is just too sad for a dog/cat to be left at the shelter just because it was an unwanted gift. Even a child should be allowed to meet the companion first to make sure they will not be afraid of it or hurt it and most importantly that the pet is not afraid of the child. We are happy to give you a gift certificate to give your loved one and then they can return when they have time to consider what kind of pet they want. Our staff and volunteers will be happy to help them find a companion that will fit into their lives depending on living arrangements, time and energy to devote to that pet.
Max (ID# A 1078734) is an 8 year old, male black & tan smooth coated Chihuahua & Beagle mix. He is a great size weighing 20 pounds. This happy outgoing boy is family friendly and dog friendly. He happily takes walks and is excellent on leash. He has that cute little Beagle face and coloring. Max loves to shower people with love and lots of kisses. Max is an easy going gentle lap dog. He would love to find his forever home and possibly have a stocking with his name hung up for doggie treats and toys. Bring your whole family to our Eastside shelter to meet this little cutie. Maybe you are a retired person looking for a companion to walk around the block and then curl up to read a book or be your partner as a couch potato. Well Max would be happy with either life scenario.

Jayden (ID# A1191124) is a 1 year & 4 month old, female golden brown American Bull Terrier mix. The other in her mix makes her a tall and think lovely lady weighing only 48 pounds—a very nice size. Like many dogs that get lost from their homes she was on the shy side initially. She has a very gentle loving side. She enjoys leaning against her person for love affection and is quick to give kisses in return. She is pretty good on leash but daily walks and practice will make her perfect. She also has a playful side. She loves to fetch the tennis balls and is learning to “drop it”. She has been known to burry her toys too. During her temperament test she was found to be dog friendly. She has attended our larger dog play groups. During her first play group she was unsure but interested so she may not have had an opportunity for dog play previously. During her next play date she was still somewhat unsure when the group approached her for greetings but she was much more playful. She is a lovely girl with shorter fur that always stays clean. She will need extra care on those cold days and a nice warm bed inside your home. She could a good match for a single person, a family with children 10 or over and even a mature couple/person that is looking for a daily walking partner and loving companion. This sweet girl with the lovely name is in our second building (B) at our Eastside shelter. She’d love to begin her new life spending the holidays with her very own person and a brand new home.

Thank you for helping bring holiday joy to all the homeless pets at the Animal Welfare Department shelters.
This is the time of year that the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center receives even more calls than normal (and yes, many of them are about holiday chocolates!)
Goodies that are baddies for pets:
Wrapped gifts containing food,
Snow globes
Holiday such as chocolate, uncooked poultry, bread dough, fruitcake and alcohol
Salt in ice melt
Homemade play dough and salt-dough ornaments
Plants that can cause (generally mild) illness
Poinsettia, Christmas cactus and Holly
The Big 5 Holiday Dangers:
- Chocolate: This tasty treat accounts for the vast majority of holiday calls to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control center (Halloween and Valentine’s Day don’t even come close). Why? Often it’s because of wrapped chocolate gifts left under the tree. And with the popularity of cocoa content, it takes even less candy to get our four-legged friends into a world of trouble.
- Tree preservatives: What is generally seen is mild gastrointestinal upset. However, if there is bacterial contamination, the potential for gastrointestinal upset can be more significant.
- Poinsettias: Poinsettias are primarily mucous-membrane irritants – and despite the worry they cause pet owners, the plants aren’t usually too dangerous if treated properly.
- Medications: Guest. Winter colds. Kids home from school. This trifecta of medication exposure dangers calls for extra caution. Add the fact that worried pet owners generally can’t remember how much medicine was actually in that little baggie that the pup ate, and you can just feel a headache coming on. Any and all medications need to be stored up high or in a locked cabinet.
- Alcohol: Yes, some days we feel like going home and having a stiff drink after dealing with all those chocolate cases. However, right now we are talking about the little Chihuahua who likes to scale the couch and help herself to the owner’s eggnog. The good news: Animals usually vomit after alcohol ingestion. The bad news: Alcohol is absorbed quickly.
