I am very happy to report that both Bran and Lola found homes last Saturday! Those of us that were their fan club did a happy dance when we learned the good news.
Our first featured pet has several fans at AWD because she is doing so well in her Pit Bull Ambassador classes and is just such a people loving dog.
Usually I don’t get a chance to speak about Poodles because they are in such high demand they are quickly adopted. Our second featured pet has several kennel buddies but sometimes just needs some “me” time away from them so he relaxes in the outside portion of his kennel. Perhaps people just did not notice him and therefore I am able to feature this adorable boy.
Stacey (ID# A 1692524) is a 2 year old, female brindle & white American Pit Bull Terrier mix. She weighs 31.8 pounds, a somewhat smaller gal. Stacey came to us a stray in January. She had some skin allergies that were treated with antibiotics. She has had no other flare ups and now has a lovely brindle coat. Perhaps she just was sensitive to our cleaning agents but her new parents will need to acknowledge that she may be sensitive to hard detergents. So many of us have found we too are much more comfortable when using a detergent made for sensitive skin. Stacey is one of our Pit Bull Ambassadors. She has participated in the training classes and is a star pupil. She is a perfect ambassador for her breed. She knows sit and down well. Her volunteer and staff trainers have taught her to sit at doors prior to exiting or entering. She just loves people and is an affectionate cuddle bug. When you adopt you are able to attend our free training classes. When you bring Stacey you will learn how to keep up all the tricks and polite behavior she has already learned. Boy won’t your friends be impressed? She also enjoys a good game of chase in our doggie play groups and is very good with other dogs. Whether she is on her way to play group or training this girl has such joy on her face. She anxiously awaits you. As always ask to meet Stacey out of her kennel and she will melt your heart. You may come meet little Stacey at our Eastside shelter.

Todd (ID# A 1701883) is a 9 year young, male white miniature poodle mix. This little guy weighs 13.6 pounds. Todd loves to take walks and is easy on leash. He enjoys taking in the sights on a walk and is alert, curious and interested in his environment. Todd loves attention and to cuddle on a lap. He is presently kenneled with several other dogs and he is doing well with each of them. If you have another little one in need of a friend we are always happy to conduct a meet and greet. When Todd had his initial meeting with our staff he was found to be a family friendly dog. Since Todd’s wild and crazy party days are in the past he might do best in a quieter home with a smaller family or older children. Want to share your lap? Todd is waiting for his forever companion at our Eastside shelter.

It’s hard to believe that Fall is just around the corner. School has started and August is half over. We want to remind you about our Primp Your Pit promotion. We have many truly wonderful Pit Bull mixes in our shelter and it is a joy to watch them blossom into Pit Bull Ambassadors through our training program. As much as we love dogs like Stacey that we featured above, our fondest wish is that shelters across the country would not be crowded with other sweet dogs like Stacey because of too many unwanted/unplanned litters. So PLEASE do your part by taking advantage of the few remaining days in August by bringing in your American Pit Bull Terriers and Pit Bull Terrier type dogs in to be spayed/neutered at a ridiculously great price of $20 and a free nail trim to boot.
Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department Urges
“Pit Bull” Parents to Prevent Unwanted
Litters during the August “Primp Your Pit” Campaign
Albuquerque, New Mexico – This August, Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department plans to spay/neuter 60 Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs for residents only in Albuquerque for a special $20 rate, which includes a free doggie nail trim, during PetSmart Charities® annual “Primp Your Pit” campaign.
American Pit Bull Terriers are one of the most popular dogs in the country. Yet an estimated 70% of all dogs housed and euthanized in urban animal shelters are Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs.
Sadly, myths and misunderstandings contribute to high shelter intake and low adoption rates of Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs of all ages.
To reduce their shelter numbers, PetSmart Charities is providing more than $388,000 in grant funding to 57 animal welfare organizations across the nation so they can sterilize 6, 796 Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs during the August campaign.
The American Veterinary Medical Association endorses spaying and neutering puppies as young as eight to 10 weeks old. Research shows that the procedure may improve the behavior and health of the pet, including reducing the risk of certain reproductive cancers and infections.
Pit bull parents who wish to take advantage of this special offer must mention the “Primp Your Pit” promotion when they schedule their appointments. The promotion is based on availability and spaces are limited.
Please visit www.cabq.gov/pets or call 764-1170 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
