NASCAR star Tony Stewart
The events over the weekend surrounding NASCAR star Tony Stewart and the incident that resulted in the death of another driver during a dirt track race, should make us take stock of what is going on in society. We hold celebrities, athletes and others in the public eye to a much different standard than we do "regular" citizens. The video from the incident clearly shows Kevin Ward, Jr. get out of his vehicle after being ran off the track by Stewart, Ward should have known the danger of walking onto the track to confront Stewart, but did it anyway. The next few seconds would prove fatal to Ward as he is then struck by Stewart's car. But my opinion, upon review of the video you can clearly see Stewart turn his wheels into Ward. Did Stewart intentionally kill Ward, probably not but Stewart did make the effort to at least buzz him or scare him. As of yet no criminal charges have been filed, but if this took place in any street in America, they probably would be charged. It is another situation where athletes took matters into their own hands by using violence, and we as a culture have always looked the other way, telling ourselves it was just the "heat of the moment" in a game or race. Our society needs to grow up and realize violence where ever it is needs to be dealt with, albeit a basketball player punching an opponent, a celebrity hitting a photographer or in this unfortunate case a driver killing a fellow driver.
